Lou Clark knows lots of things. She knows how many footsteps there are between the bus stop and home. She knows she likes working in The Buttered Bun tea shop and she knows she might not love her boyfriend Patrick.

What Lou doesn't know is she's about to lose her job or that knowing what's coming is what keeps her sane.

Will Traynor knows his motorcycle accident took away his desire to live. He knows everything feels very small and rather joyless now and he knows exactly how he's going to put a stop to that.

What Will doesn't know is that Lou is about to burst into his world in a riot of colour. And neither of them knows they're going to change the other for all time.

Hands down to the best book I read this year (so far). I kid you not, this book is a real tearjerker.

I know it is (probably way too) late to make the review of this book now, but somehow I can’t help it. I just have to share my impression about this book. I wanted to read it since about two years ago, but due to the piled to-be-read-books and expensive shipping (sigh), I decided to just let it slide and thought that maybe I could read it later.

Until they announced—or I heard—about the movie adaptation earlier this year. I did not want to watch the movie before I read the book, so, a few months ago I purchased this book (and got free shipping). Mine is the movie tie-in version. I usually hate this version of a book and prefer the original cover, but to feed my curiosity, I bought it anyway. And I really didn’t mind, because it is Mother of Dragons and Sam Claflin on the cover, afterall, so what’s not to like?

Well. Let’s cut the blabbering and move on to the review.

Louisa Clark is an ordinary twenty something girl with not much ambition about her life ahead, if it is not for the fact that she lost her job in a cafe, she probably wouldn’t go anywhere for the rest of her life. She loves her boring life way too much.

Will is everything that Louisa’s not. He led a big life, had a great job, an adventurer, playboy, until a motorcycle accident made him lost his ability to do those things he loves. He is quadriplergic, and for someone who is after the kind of life he had, it’s just too painful. And he knew exactly how he’s going to end it. He attempted on suicide but survived, and he promised his mother that he’s going to live, for a while. After the promised time passed, he will go to Dignitas.

Louisa and Will’s paths cross, and they are about to change each other’s lives.

Of course this kind of topic is controversial—Will wants to go to Dignitas and all. But even though there was not even once Will’s point of view is written here, I understand. I understand what he’s going through, and why he’s willing to put the end that he wanted.

It’s not about Will being ungrateful lad or something.

He’s just making the best of his time, before it got stale, before he feels like it’s wasted and he gets worse until only the bad memories left.

He does not want to hold back his family, as he knows he’s making them unhappy.

It’s about his unconditional love for Louisa. He cares about her future.. that he wants her to really live her life.

It’s about understanding, that somebody’s life, is never ours to decide.

"I know this isn't a conventional love story. I know there are all sort of reasons I shouldn't even be saying what I am. But I love you. I do. And I think you might even love me a little bit."

So here I am, months after reading Me Before You and I am still reeling. I wasn’t emotionally ready to write a review back then, but this morning I came across someone’s update saying she accidentally opened the last page of Me Before You and worried that it might not come out as exciting because she already found out the ending.

I wanted to tell her that there is a lot more to it. It is not about happy or sad ending, and whether Will is staying alive or not.

Because that’s the thing about character-driven story, how the characters grow throughout the pages is what matters most. Just like the title, this book tells us a story about the person they once were before meeting each other, how they changed for the better, and everything else that happened in between. Will and Lou’s imperfections made me actually learn something, feel something, without trying too hard. Without being preachy at all. It portrayed the thing that happened to them realistically: Will being cynical, and Louisa, despite all her potentials, rather stayed where she was; in the world she knew. Because sometimes I feel like that, too. I feel vulnerable to the world, like Will. I also become so guarded, like Louisa, when it comes to people questioning my decisions. They are so human their characters hit a little too close to home. I don’t always like them and how they react, but isn’t it the same with real people? Aren’t we, sometimes, getting sick of dealing with them?

Definitely one of my best reads this year (oh boy how many times do I have to say this). Heck, probably one of the best romance books I have—or will ever—read in my entire life. Rating? 5 stars out of 5!

"You only get one life. It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible."

Anyway, I have watched the movie and it was actually below my expectation. I know that movies and books are two different way of storytelling, but the movie missed out a lot of important details—the events that led to the occurence of Will and Louisa’s chemistry. I barely even shed a tear. So there’s that, I didn’t really enjoy the movie despite the incredible casts, what a shame.

But I absolutely looove the soundtrack, even though it is still occured to me that Death Cab for Cutie’s What Sarah Said should be on the tracklist—the song gave me goosebumps and those “love is watching someone dies” kind of resonate with some parts of the book. But it’s okay, I love Not Today as well.
